What Is Water Hammer (and How to Stop the Banging Pipes)?

If your pipes bang, knock or shudder when you shut off a tap or the washing machine cycles, that's “water hammer”. It's not just annoying — over time it can damage fittings and joints. Here's what's going on.

What causes water hammer

When fast-moving water is suddenly stopped (a quick-closing tap, a washing-machine or dishwasher valve), the moving water slams to a halt and the shockwave travels back through the pipe — banging it against framing. Loose pipes, high water pressure and missing arrestors all make it worse.

Why it's worth fixing

Beyond the noise, repeated shock loads stress joints, valves and fittings, and can eventually cause leaks. It's a small problem that's cheap to fix now and annoying (or costly) to ignore.

How a plumber stops it

  • Fitting water hammer arrestors near the offending appliances or taps
  • Securing loose pipes so they can't bang against framing
  • Checking and, if needed, fitting a pressure-reducing valve if your incoming pressure is too high

We'll find the source and fix it properly rather than just quietening one symptom.

How we can help

FAQ

Quick answers

Is water hammer serious?

It's not an emergency, but the repeated shock can damage fittings and cause leaks over time. Best to fix it before it does.

What's the most common fix?

Usually fitting water hammer arrestors and securing loose pipes. High incoming pressure may also need a pressure-reducing valve.
